Eighteen – Samantha

“You’re home early,” Avery said. She was sitting with her feet on the kitchen table, drinking a can of Coke.

“Get your feet down,” I muttered. “And give me that Coke.” I grabbed it and took a long, angry sip.

“Jeez, Mom.”

“Jeez yourself.” I crumpled the empty can and slammed it onto the table, then sank into a chair, exhausted. “You’re home early, too.”

About a month ago, she’d gotten tired of giving up all her Friday nights to babysit. Joy had found another sitter who lived in the neighborhood so she could alternate between her and Avery. Now Avery went out on the Fridays she wasn’t working, usually going to parties or seeing her boyfriend.

“We’re not talking about me,” she said. “Why are you so upset?”

“I’m not.”

Wordlessly, she pointed to the crumpled Coke can.

“Fine, I’m upset.” I sighed. “Why did you encourage me to get serious with Joy? She isn’t interested, and now I just feel like an idiot.”

“You asked her out for real? That’s great – except…” Trailing off, she pinched her lips together. “Are you sure she’s not interested? That can’t be right.”

“I guess she felt like she’d always be competing with Lesley. And the thing is, she’s not wrong.”

“Oh, Mom, why did you even bring her into this?” she asked. “This is between you and Joy. You should’ve left Lesley out of it.”

Okay, she was right – just like she’d been right about me having feelings for Joy. How had I managed to raise such a wise child? Too wise. “It’s a little late for that now,” I said. “And I’m tired of your so-called advice. You should go to bed.”

She snorted. “You need my advice. Which of us is in a happy, loving relationship, again?”

“Touché.”

“Oh, and which of us was determined to stay single and emotionally detached, always dating and never committing?”

“Okay, okay, I get it.” She was rubbing salt in the wound now. “Give me your advice. Fine. God knows I need it.”

She crossed her arms, looking satisfied. “First, how did you ask her out? Did you make a grand gesture?”

“Of course not,” I said. “I had a serious, adult conversation with her.”

“That’s where you went wrong.” Avery stood up and paced around. “Kyle asked me out with a prom-posal, except not to prom. It was to the back-to-school dance.”

“So a proposal to go to the dance with him?” I leaned back in my chair, frowning. “What did he do?”

“He filled my locker with roses and waited for me to open it. As all the roses fell out, he was behind me with a sign saying ‘will you go to the dance with me?’”

“Sounds romantic,” I said. “You didn’t feel like telling me at the time?”

She looked guilty. “Again, we’re talking about you, not me.” She stopped pacing and put her hands on the table. “You need to do something like that for Joy to win her over. Something to show her she’s special, and that you really want to be with her.”

“Not a chance,” I said.
